Latest news: Rev. David Wilkerson dies in traffic accident
The pastor and evangelist David Wilkerson, author of famous book "The Cross and the Switchblade" died Wednesday in a traffic accident in Texas. He was 79. Reverend Wilkerson was founding pastor of Times Square Church in New York, and the organization Teen Challenge. "With deep sadness we inform you the sudden death of Rev. David Wilkerson, our founding pastor," said the pastor of Times Square Church Carter Conlon, said in a statement on the website of the congregation.
Conlon added that details on the Wilkerson memorial service would be provided later.
"Please remember the Wilkerson family in their prayers in a time when our founder, the Rev. David Wilkerson, passed with the Lord tonight," said Teen Challenge to his followers in Twitter.
The evangelist is survived by his wife, four children and 11 grandchildren. Accident details
Wilkerson drove eastbound on U.S. Highway 175, Texas, and moved to the opposite lane while a truck was heading west. The truck driver saw the vehicle and tried to dodge, but still collided head-on, according to police Eric Long.

Wilkerson posted a blog today. The publication, entitled, "When Fail All Media", led to those facing difficulties to stand firm in faith.
"Those who cross the valley of the shadow of death, you hear this word: The last cry for a few nights dark and horrible, and in that darkness you suddenly hear the Father say, 'I'm with you,'" Wilkerson wrote. "Beloved, God has never failed to act in kindness and love. When they fail all media - their love prevails. Cling to your faith. Cling to his word. There is no other hope in this world, "he added.

Life and Ministry
Wilkerson was the second son of a Pentecostal Christian family, and raised in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania , in a house "full of Bibles," began preaching at age 14.
After high school, Wilkerson entered the Central Bible Institute Assemblies of God where he studied for two years.
In 1953 he married Gwen Wilkerson and Pastor began to preach as his wife in small churches in Scottdale and Philipsburg, Pennsylvania.
Later, in 1957 he read in the magazine Times a story about a child with polio who was killed by gang members in New York. In February 1958 he decided to move to New York to help and preach the gospel to members of criminal gangs and drug addicts.
On September 22, 1971 founded the World Organization Challenge.
In 1987 he founded the Church of Times Square in New York at a time when Times Square was frowned upon and recognized for being an area frequented by prostitutes, runaways, drug addicts, homeless and hustlers, with live shows and adult movie theaters. Pastor David Wilkerson, who founded upon it, to provide spiritual help to all those people who were in need of God.
